TRADESNAP for UK trades

Work out what the job actually pays you.

A CIS take-home calculator, a job profit check and a quote builder for electricians, plumbers, builders and subcontractors. Estimate free on this page. Add your company number once and we run the full calculation on the live engine.

Paid version: works out your CIS position from your own invoices and tells you what to reclaim, before the year end. £89, one payment. Secure checkout by Stripe; payments are processed by Pharoah Technology Ltd. Paying buys the calculation and report described on this page. It is not insurance, it carries no protection scheme, and it does not guarantee a refund, a tax outcome or any HMRC decision.

CIS take-home check

Type your figures for an instant estimate. When you want the real numbers, run the full calculation on the live engine.

Figures come from the live TradeSnap engine. If it cannot be reached the page falls back to a local estimate and says so. How the numbers are worked out, and the sources.

Quote sanity check

Job profit check

Most trades quote from instinct. This shows whether the job still makes money once labour, materials, travel and overhead are counted.

Margin signal

Does the job pay?

Use this as the commercial trigger: low-margin jobs need better quoting, cleaner follow-up or a different customer path.

Estimated job profit
£1,801
Net quote ex VAT£3,500
Total job cost£1,699
Margin51.5%
RecommendationHealthy - above 20% target.

Perfect lead split.

High-margin trades get routed to growth and websites. Low-margin trades get quote systems, CRM follow-up and bookkeeping cleanup.

Build a quote

Itemise labour and materials. "Price it" looks up an indicative benchmark rate; always check it with your supplier and edit it. Your margin and tax view is private to you.

How the numbers are worked out.

Two calculations run on this page, and they are not the same. The instant on-page estimate is deliberately simple. The full run on the live engine adds income tax bands and National Insurance. Both are estimates, and both use the rules and rates below.

CIS take-home

  • Materials are your gross income times the materials percentage you pick. CIS applies to labour only, so labour is gross income minus materials.
  • The CIS deduction is labour times 20% if you are registered, 30% if you are not, and 0% with gross payment status.
  • Taxable profit is gross income minus materials minus your other expenses.
  • Instant on-page estimate: tax is taken as a flat 20% of taxable profit, with no personal allowance and no National Insurance. It is a planning signal, not a tax figure.
  • Full run on the live engine: 2025/26 personal allowance, basic and higher rate income tax and Class 4 National Insurance. Class 2 is not charged, because GOV.UK treats profits over £12,570 as if Class 2 had been paid. Your CIS deductions are then credited against the total, which shows a likely balance due or refund.

The job profit check takes your quote (ex VAT if you are VAT registered), then subtracts materials, labour hours times your internal hourly rate, mileage at 45p a mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p after, and a 15% overhead on those direct costs. It reads 20% margin or more as healthy, 10% to 20% as tight, and below 10% as too low. Figures use 2025/26 rates and thresholds and will be rebased when the tax year changes. Free calculators are estimates only, not tax, accounting or legal advice. Nothing on this page guarantees a refund or any HMRC outcome. Check your own position, or ask an accountant, before you file or rely on a figure.
